Internet Explorer: To Dump or Not to Dump

We do not create these articles to endorse or denounce any particular product or service. However, from time to time we do write about trends involving certain products or services to keep a reader and a consumer up to date on developments and changes regarding a particular product or service.

In this article, we examine some recent discussions that have been had in regard to Internet Explorer. Again, this article is not designed as an endorsement or denouncement of Internet Explorer; rather, we merely are providing some information on trends as to Internet Explorer.

During the summer of 2004, the United States Department of Homeland Security actually announced that people should stop using Internet Explorer. This step by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was an unusually specific step or course of action for this agency.

It is important to keep in mind that during the summertime Internet Explorer had a 95% share of global browser usage. But, it is precisely the fact that Internet Explorer is so prevalent that it is subject to attack by virus and worms and such problems.

The Department of Homeland Security apparently believes that if men and women leave Internet Explorer in droves Internet Explorer will no longer be subject to the significant and constant attacks it has faced at the hands of people with illicit goals. But, this theory does beg the question. What happens to the browser service that all of these former Internet Explorer customers flock to?

Since the announcement by the Department of Homeland Security, the market share of Internet Explore has slipped 1% to 94%. Naturally, such a slip could be attributed to the Department of Homeland Security announcement or simply a burp in the marketplace.

In the end, securing Internet Explorer more firmly is a far better course than abandoning the product.
