The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is Apple’s laptop-class tablet, the mini-LED XDR display, M-series silicon and a keyboard-and-pencil ecosystem that replaced computers for a real fraction of its owners. It also launched at laptop money, which is where the refurbished market rewrites the story: 30-55% off for hardware whose working life runs the better part of a decade. Here is the big Pro, bought sensibly.

Why second-hand is not “second best”
iPads age slower than phones, no pocket life, fewer drops, batteries cycled gently, and the M-series Pros age slowest of all: silicon specified for laptop workloads meeting tablet demands it out-runs for years. The XDR panel remains the finest screen Apple ships at any size, iPadOS support runs long, and the accessory ecosystem (Magic Keyboards, Pencils) trades used alongside at its own settlements.
The tablet-specific checks are few and quick: panel inspection at brightness, battery health via settings or diagnostics, Pencil pairing if bundled, and the same Activation Lock gate every Apple purchase walks through.
Tablets live gentler lives than phones, the big Pro ages like furniture with a flagship inside, and settles like neither.
The savings are real
Thirty to fifty-five percent off laptop-class pricing buys the XDR canvas and M-silicon at money that funds the keyboard and Pencil from the change, artists, readers, editors and laptop-replacers collect the gentle-life dividend.
New vs used, side by side
| Brand new | Used / refurbished | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Laptop money | 30-55% less, tablet money again |
| The canvas | XDR mini-LED | Identical, inspected at brightness |
| Working life | Near-decade class | Gentle histories, most of it remaining |
| Accessories | Full retail again | Keyboards and Pencils settle alongside |
| Warranty | Apple standard | Refurbisher cover + possible residual + ACL |
The five-minute checklist before you pay
- Activation Lock cleared: the Apple gate, a setup screen asking for your ID, verified before payment where possible and on arrival always.
- Panel at brightness: the XDR is the purchase, solid colours across all 12.9 inches, corners included.
- Battery health checked: gentle lives age gently, but the readout confirms the individual.
- M-generation to workload: every M-chip out-runs tablet duties, buy the generation the budget reaches and ignore the rest.
- Pencil and keyboard compatibility: generations pair specifically, confirm the accessories you own or plan against the model bought.
- The universal remainder: serial-checked coverage, warranty stated, on-platform payment.
You have more protection than you think
Laptop-class launch pricing sets the Australian Consumer Law’s durability expectations at laptop length, business-seller Pros answer for years of reasonable service, panels included. Residual AppleCare rides some recent stock; the serial check prices it in. The routine nets the canvas whole.

Frequently asked questions
Which 12.9 generation should I buy? The oldest M-series the budget reaches, M1 onward all out-run tablet workloads; newer buys runway and XDR refinements. The M1 is the value verdict.
Can it really replace a laptop? With the keyboard, for mail-documents-browser lives, comprehensively; for specialised desktop software, the plain answer stays no. Its owners know which life they lead.
How long will a used Pro last? iPadOS support runs long and the silicon runs longer, the near-decade class is earned, gentle histories included.
Wi-Fi or cellular used? Cellular settles at small premiums and adds the anywhere-life, worth it for travellers; hotspot covers the rest.
The bottom line
The refurbished 12.9 Pro is the laptop-class tablet at tablet money again: the XDR canvas, M-silicon and a near-decade of working life at 30-55% off. Clear the lock, inspect the canvas, check the cell, and buy the screen everything else in the house will envy.
